About Trustee Susie Abrahams
Susie qualified as a social worker back in 1974 and spent the first ten years of her career supporting a wide range of people across Sheffield — from older adults and people with disabilities to children and young people. She later specialised in children’s services, working closely with families and communities to create positive support groups and activities. Susie moved into management roles in 1995 and spent over a decade leading social work teams in child protection, long-term placements and hospital services.
She then became a Court Welfare Officer (Children’s Guardian), making sure children and young people had a strong voice in both public and private family court proceedings. Alongside this, Susie is passionate about lifelong learning — she holds two BA Honours degrees in Humanities, and has helped teach and mentor social work students at Sheffield Hallam University.
Susie has always been committed to her community. Over the years she has volunteered in hospitals, supported young families and veterans, run art and support groups, and campaigned for better local resources. She currently volunteers as an archivist at Yorkshire Sculpture Park, and also spent 12 years as a Town Councillor, getting involved in community life across all ages.
Susie loves seeing people grow, learn and belong — and she’s a big supporter of STEP’s plans to help even more educational and community activities take shape in the Steel Valley.
